About Chuck Tanner
Chuck Tanner (1928-2011) was a New Castle, Pennsylvania native who signed with the Boston Braves organization in June 1946 and hit over .300 across a long minor-league apprenticeship before reaching the majors. A left-handed-hitting outfielder, he debuted for the Milwaukee Braves on April 12, 1955, in unforgettable fashion: pinch-hitting for Warren Spahn in the eighth inning, he homered on the very first pitch he saw in the big leagues, off Cincinnati's Gerry Staley, to tie a game Milwaukee won 4-2. Over eight seasons (1955-1962) with the Braves, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels he batted .261 with 21 home runs in 396 games. Tanner became far more famous as a manager, guiding the Chicago White Sox, Oakland A's, Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves and winning 1,352 games, capped by the Pirates' 1979 'We Are Family' World Series title. An eternal optimist dubbed baseball's 'Mr. Sunshine,' he was named 1972 Manager of the Year. This 1957 Topps card postdates his 1955 rookie issue.
