About Raul Sanchez

Raúl Guadalupe Sánchez Rodríguez, born December 12, 1930, in Marianao, Cuba, was a Cuban relief pitcher whose major-league career spanned parts of three seasons. He debuted with the Washington Senators on April 17, 1952, then resurfaced with the Cincinnati Redlegs in 1957 and the renamed Cincinnati Reds in 1960, making his final appearance on May 17, 1960. His most productive year came in 1957, when he set career highs in games (38), wins (3), and saves (5). Sánchez was nicknamed "Salivita" — roughly "a little saliva" in Spanish — a nod to his reputation for throwing a spitball. In the minors he pitched for clubs including the 1954 Havana Sugar Kings of the International League. Over his brief big-league career he compiled a 5–3 record with a 4.62 ERA and five saves in 49 appearances, with two starts and one shutout. His 1957 Topps card is his rookie card. He died June 30, 2002, in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
