About Luis Arroyo
Luis Enrique "Tite" Arroyo, born February 18, 1927, in Peñuelas, Puerto Rico, signed with the Ponce Leones of the Puerto Rican Winter League in 1946 and reached the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1955. The screwball-throwing left-hander joined Vic Power as the first Puerto Ricans named to an All-Star Game that summer. He pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1956-57 (as shown on this card) and the Cincinnati Redlegs before finding fame with the New York Yankees, whom he joined in 1960 as the first Puerto Rican to play for the franchise. His nickname "Tite" is a common Spanish diminutive of his middle name, Enrique. Arroyo's 1961 season was legendary: a 15-5 record, 2.19 ERA, and league-leading 29 saves in 65 games earned him a second All-Star nod, The Sporting News AL Fireman of the Year award, and a World Series title, his bullpen work repeatedly closing out Whitey Ford's 25 wins. He finished 40-32 and later entered the Puerto Rico Sports and Latino Baseball halls of fame.
