About Bubba Phillips
John Melvin "Bubba" Phillips (February 24, 1928 - June 22, 1993) was a two-sport star at Mississippi Southern, where he was a football captain and set a still-standing school record with 25 career interceptions. He turned down the pros in football and signed with the Detroit Tigers organization in 1948, reaching the majors with Detroit in 1955 before a trade sent him to the Chicago White Sox. In 1957 he took over as Chicago's regular third baseman, hitting .270, and his prized versatility let him cover third base and all three outfield spots. His steady glove and bat helped the "Go-Go" White Sox capture the 1959 American League pennant and reach the World Series against the Dodgers. Later, with the Cleveland Indians, he enjoyed his best season in 1961 (18 home runs, 72 RBIs). Over ten big-league years he batted .255 with 62 homers and 356 RBIs. His nickname "Bubba" was a childhood one given by his brother. He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1972.
