1958 Topps #415 Bob Bowman

About Bob Bowman
Bowman hit .288 with 8 home runs and 24 RBI in 91 games for the 1958 Phillies, who finished last in the National League. Used mostly as a reserve outfielder, he was the majors' top pinch-hitter, going 13-for-32 (.406), and hit three pinch-hit home runs. His Topps card #415 comes from Series Five of the 494-card set, numbered between Sammy White and Foster Castleman, and shows him with the Phillies.
Bob Bowman was an outfielder from Laytonville, California, who grew up in San Jose and starred at Lincoln High School, then went on to Napa Junior College and San Jose State. He began pro ball in 1950 with Klamath Falls as a pitcher and was moved to the outfield, where he developed an arm considered among the best in the National League. He reached the Philadelphia Phillies on April 16, 1955, running for Richie Ashburn, and spent all five of his big-league seasons with the club, hitting 17 home runs with a .249 average. Streaky and often a reserve behind stronger outfield competition, he became best known as a pinch-hitter. A knee injury suffered in winter ball in Venezuela dogged his last season, 1959, when he even pitched in five games. He died in San Jose in 2017.
