About Foster Castleman

Castleman changed teams in the spring of 1958: the Giants, newly in San Francisco, sold his contract to Baltimore for $30,000 in late March. He stayed all year as a reserve infielder, starting 64 games at shortstop in a platoon with Willy Miranda, and hit .170 with 3 home runs and 14 RBI in 98 games. His Topps card #416, from the fifth series of the 494-card 1958 set, shows him with the Orioles and lists him at 5 ft 11 in and 180 pounds.

Foster Castleman was a Nashville-born infielder who grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and signed with the New York Giants in 1949 after a tryout camp run by player development director Carl Hubbell. Two years in the Navy at San Diego interrupted his climb. He reached the Giants in August 1954, the season they won the World Series, though he did not play in it. In 1956 he became the regular third baseman, started 97 games there and hit 14 home runs, tied for third on the club. Three knee surgeries sapped his mobility, and he was back in Triple-A in 1957. The Orioles bought his contract in 1958 and used him at shortstop in a platoon. He finished his career at Triple-A in 1959 and 1960, leaving the majors with 268 games, a .205 average and 20 home runs. He later worked for a Cincinnati real estate broker and died in November 2020 at age 89.
