About Carl Furillo

Furillo's 1958 Topps #417 shows him with the Los Angeles Dodgers and belongs to Series Five of a 494-card set. The Dodgers' first season on the West Coast was 1958, and he hit .290 with 18 home runs and 83 RBI in 122 games, eighth in the league in RBI. The card follows his .306 season in Brooklyn's last year, 1957.

Carl Furillo spent his entire 15-year career with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, mostly in right field. Born in Stony Creek Mills, Pennsylvania, to Italian immigrant parents, he signed with Reading in 1940, served three years in the Army in the Pacific, and reached Brooklyn in 1946. He hit .322 with 106 RBI in 1949 and .305 with 106 RBI in 1950. Furillo won the 1953 National League batting title at .344, made the All-Star team in 1952 and 1953, and finished with a .299 average, 192 home runs and 1,910 hits. His throwing arm was his signature, and he led the league in outfield assists in 1950 and 1951. He played in seven World Series, including the 1955 championship, and the 1959 title after moving west. The Dodgers released him in 1960 while he was injured, and he sued the club, eventually collecting $21,000. He died in 1989.
