About Bobby Avila

Avila's 1958 Topps card is #276, part of the fourth series of the 494-card set, and pictures him with the Cleveland Indians. He arrived at the year off a .268 season and played under new general manager Frank Lane and manager Bobby Bragan, splitting his time between second base (82 games) and third (33) while batting .253. Lane often used his name in trade talk that summer. Topps also added the Sport Magazine All-Star subset (#475-495) this year.

Roberto Francisco Avila, known as Beto in Mexico and Bobby in the United States, was a second baseman from Veracruz, Mexico, and the first Mexican-born player to succeed in the major leagues. After hitting for average with Puebla in the Mexican League, he signed with Cleveland for a $17,500 bonus and spent ten seasons with the Indians, becoming their regular second baseman in 1951. He was an American League All-Star in 1952, 1954 and 1955, the first Mexican-born player picked for the game, and in 1954 he won the league batting title at .341, the first Mexican-born player to do so, earning The Sporting News player of the year award. He hit .281 with 80 home runs in 1,300 games and closed out 1959 with Baltimore, Boston and Milwaukee. Back home he owned the Veracruz Eagles, served as president of the Mexican League, became mayor of Veracruz and sat in the national legislature. He entered the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971 and the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
