About Virgil Trucks
Trucks spent his last big-league season in 1958 at age 41, splitting it between Kansas City and the New York Yankees. Every one of his 41 appearances came in relief; he went 2-2 with a 3.65 ERA and four saves. His Topps card, #277 in the fourth series, pictures him with the Kansas City Athletics.
Virgil Trucks, a Birmingham, Alabama, right-hander, earned the nickname Fire in 1938 when he struck out more than 400 batters for Andalusia in the Alabama-Florida League. He reached Detroit in 1941, lost two seasons to Navy service, and won Game 2 of the 1945 World Series over the Cubs less than two weeks after his discharge. He was an All-Star in 1949 and 1954. In 1952 he went 5-19 for a last-place Tigers club yet threw two 1-0 no-hitters, beating Washington on May 15 and the Yankees on August 25. Traded from the Browns to the White Sox in 1953, he won 20 games that year. He finished with 177 wins, a 3.39 ERA and 1,534 strikeouts over 17 seasons, then coached for Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Detroit. He is in the Alabama and Michigan sports halls of fame.
