1958 Topps #278 Mack Burk

About Mack Burk
Burk's 1958 was a single game for the Phillies: he pinch hit for pitcher Ray Semproch in the 14th inning against the San Francisco Giants and struck out looking against Johnny Antonelli, his last major league appearance. He spent the rest of the year in the minors. His Topps card, #278, is a single-player card in Series Four, the 1958 run that spans #265-352.
Mack Burk was a 6-foot-4 right-handed catcher from Nacogdoches, Texas, who attended the University of Texas at Austin and signed a $40,000 bonus contract with the Philadelphia Phillies in September 1955. Under the bonus rules of the day he had to spend his first two professional seasons on a big league roster. He debuted May 25, 1956, as a pinch runner for Andy Seminick, and in his third game singled off Joe Nuxhall of Cincinnati for his first hit. He caught one inning that July, handling his only chance cleanly. Military service took his 1957 season. Of his 16 major league games, 13 came as a pinch runner and two as a pinch hitter, and he finished with three runs scored and a .500 career average on two at-bats. After his last big league game in 1958 he played on in the Phillies farm system through 1960.
