About the 1958 Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs were a second-division club in 1957, finishing near the bottom of the National League at 62-92, but they held the league's brightest emerging star in shortstop Ernie Banks. In 1958 'Mr. Cub' broke out with a major-league-leading 47 home runs and 129 RBI to earn the National League Most Valuable Player Award - then repeated as MVP in 1959, becoming the first NL player to win the honor in back-to-back seasons. Banks made the Cubs must-watch even amid losing years. Card #327's reverse carries a series checklist, reflecting Topps's new 1958 practice of putting checklists on team-card backs.
