About Hoyt Wilhelm

Hoyt Wilhelm (1922-2002) was a knuckleball pitcher whose career redefined relief pitching. He began in the minor leagues in 1942, then served in the Army-earning a Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge-and did not reach the majors until 1952, at age 29. In his first big-league at-bat he homered, the only home run he would ever hit. Pitching for nine teams over 21 seasons, mostly in relief, the five-time All-Star won ERA titles in both leagues (1952 and 1959) and a World Series with the 1954 New York Giants. He was the first pitcher to appear in 1,000 games, finishing with 1,070, and the first to reach 200 career saves. Nicknamed 'Old Folks' for his longevity, he pitched until age 49. After Baltimore claimed him off waivers from Cleveland in 1958, he no-hit the New York Yankees that September. In 1985 Wilhelm became the first relief pitcher elected to the Hall of Fame.
