1958 Topps #458 Julio Becquer

About Julio Becquer
Julio Becquer's 1958 Topps card is #458, a rookie card from the sixth series of a 494-card set, and it shows him with the Washington Senators. That summer he played 86 games for Washington, mostly at first base, hitting .238 with no home runs and 12 RBI. Milt Pappas (#457) and Curt Flood (#464) also have rookie cards in that same series.
Julio Becquer was a Havana-born first baseman signed before the 1952 season by Senators scout Joe Cambria, who fed a steady stream of Cuban talent to Washington. A left-handed batter and thrower, he came up through Drummondville in Quebec, the Havana Cubans of the Florida International League, the Havana Sugar Kings of the International League and San Diego of the Pacific Coast League before reaching the Senators in September 1955. He spent most of his career on the bench, a slick fielder who finished at .993 at first base and one of the league's steadiest pinch hitters, leading the American League in pinch hits in both 1957 and 1959. Only 1960 made him a regular, and he set career highs that season with 110 games, 75 hits and 35 runs batted in. He finished with a .244 average, 238 hits, 12 home runs and 114 RBIs in 488 games over parts of seven seasons with the Senators, Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins. He had earned a degree in agriculture in Havana and taught English; after baseball he stayed in Minnesota, worked 25 years for Dayton's department store and ran instructional camps for the Twins. He died November 1, 2020, at 88.
