About Steve Korcheck

Korcheck's 1958 Topps card is #403, a Series Five card that shows him with the Washington Senators and is a rookie card. Topps issued 494 cards that year, and this one sits in the fifth of six series. He was back in the Senators' lineup after two years of military service, catching 20 of his 21 games and batting .078.

Steve Korcheck was a right-handed catcher from McClellandtown, Pennsylvania, who stood 6 feet 1 inch and weighed 205 pounds. He came to the Washington Senators from nearby George Washington University, where he starred in both baseball and football. The San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the third round of the 1954 NFL draft, 35th overall, but he chose baseball. He reached the majors in 1954 and appeared in 58 games over four seasons for Washington: 1954, 1955, 1958 and 1959. Military service cost him the 1956 and 1957 seasons. He finished with a .159 average, 23 hits, six doubles and one triple, and his playing career wound down in 1960. His larger success came after baseball. From 1980 to 1997 Korcheck served as president of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, and in 1993 George Washington University gave him a distinguished alumni achievement award. He died in Bradenton, Florida, in August 2016, at 84.
