About Dallas Green

Dallas Green's 1962 Topps card is #111, a second-series Phillie that collectors chase in two states, 111a with no green tint and 111b with the green tint. The season behind it started beautifully and fell apart: handed a rotation spot by manager Gene Mauch, Green beat the Giants 2-0 on five hits in San Francisco on April 15, his first start of the year and the second and last shutout of his career. The arm trouble returned within weeks, and after a fourth straight ineffective outing on May 2 he was pushed to the bullpen, making only three more starts on the way to a 2-4 record and a 4.85 ERA for a 47-107 club that lost 23 in a row.

Dallas Green pitched parts of eight big league seasons, from 1960 through 1967, for the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Senators, and New York Mets, finishing 20-22 with a 4.26 ERA and 268 strikeouts in 185 games. A 6-foot-5 right-hander from Newport, Delaware, he starred as a pitcher and right fielder at the University of Delaware, going 6-0 with an 0.88 ERA as a junior in 1955 before Phillies scout Jocko Collins signed him that summer. Arm and shoulder trouble that began at Buffalo in May 1959 followed him the rest of his playing days and kept him from matching his early promise, though he gave the Phillies steady work as a spot starter and long reliever while the club climbed from 47-107 in 1961 to a pennant race in 1964. Local legend in Delaware gave him the nickname Spider for his height and long arms. He became far better known after he stopped pitching, managing the 1980 Phillies to the first World Series title in franchise history and, as Chicago Cubs general manager, building the 1984 club that won the NL East. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member, though he was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
