About Jack Baldschun

Baldschun's first Topps card, #46 in the 1962 set's opening series, is his recognized rookie card and a low-number issue. It arrived after a 1961 rookie year in which he led the National League with 65 appearances and, at 5-3, owned the only winning record on a last-place Phillies club that lost 107 games. The season that followed was better still: 67 games, a 12-7 record, a 2.96 ERA and a team-leading 13 saves as he took over the Philadelphia bullpen.

Jack Edward Baldschun (1936-2023) was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent nine major league seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, and San Diego Padres between 1961 and 1970. Selected by Philadelphia in the 1960 Rule 5 draft, he mastered a screwball that gave hitters fits and became the Phillies' bullpen anchor, leading the club in saves for three straight years while earning a reputation, in manager Gene Mauch's words, for a rubber arm and ideal temperament. A December 1965 trade sent him from Philadelphia to Baltimore and then, days later, to Cincinnati as part of the deal that brought Frank Robinson to the Orioles. He finished his career with a 48-41 record, 60 saves, a 3.69 ERA and 555 strikeouts in 457 games, all of them in relief. After baseball he settled in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and worked in lumber sales. He was not elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
