1962 Topps #146 Don Demeter

About Don Demeter
The 1962 Topps set finds Demeter in a new uniform, following the May 1961 trade that sent him and Charley Smith from Los Angeles to Philadelphia for reliever Turk Farrell and infielder Joe Koppe. Card #146, a series-2 base issue, reports his rebound 1961 season split between the two clubs - a combined 21 home runs and 70 RBI - and collectors chase it in two states, 146a without the set's green tint and 146b with it.
Don Demeter was a 6-foot-4 outfielder who signed with Brooklyn for an $800 bonus out of Capitol Hill High School and played 11 major league seasons (1956-1967) for the Dodgers, Phillies, Tigers, Red Sox and Indians. He won a World Series ring with the 1959 Dodgers, the year he homered three times in one game and became "Dangerous Don" in the papers. Traded to Philadelphia in May 1961, he had his finest season in 1962 - a .307 average, 29 home runs and 107 RBI - and that September began a 266-game errorless streak, the major league record for outfielders until Darren Lewis passed it in 1994. Dealt to Detroit for Jim Bunning after 1963, he later played for Boston and finished with Cleveland in 1967; a late-season physical voided a sale back to Detroit by flagging a heart problem later traced to diet, and he retired before the 1968 season. He batted .265 with 163 home runs and 563 RBI in 1,109 games, then pastored an Oklahoma City Baptist church he helped found. He entered the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 and died in 2021 at 86.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Does 1962 Topps #146 have variations?
Yes. Two states are catalogued and tracked separately: 146a - No Green Tint (No green tint - the standard first printing) and 146b - Green Tint (Green tint - the color-shifted second printing of series 2). Owning any one of them fills the #146 slot; the master set counts each state.

The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
