1962 Topps #249 Ed Keegan

About Ed Keegan
Card #249 in the 1962 Topps set brings Keegan back in Philadelphia Phillies flannel, another third-series number. The year before, Topps had issued his first card. The season behind this card was his shortest and his tidiest: four relief outings, eight innings, six hits, five walks, five strikeouts and a 2.25 ERA, comfortably the best mark of his three big league seasons. He pitched for the last time on April 29, and at 22 that outing closed out his major league career. Back in Philadelphia he again wore number 50, which made him the first Phillies player to wear that number in more than one season.
Edward Charles Keegan was a rail-thin right-handed pitcher, listed at 6-foot-3 and 165 pounds, born July 8, 1939, in Camden, New Jersey. He came out of Haddonfield Memorial High School and signed with his hometown Philadelphia Phillies in 1957. At the close of his third minor league season the Phillies called him up from Williamsport of the Eastern League, and he debuted August 24, 1959, at age 20, opposite Sandy Koufax and the Los Angeles Dodgers, walking four and giving up four runs. Two more starts followed, against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals, and he lost all three decisions. Roberto Clemente tagged him for an inside-the-park home run in that Pittsburgh start, the first homer Keegan allowed in the majors. He spent all of 1960 in the minors, then worked out of the bullpen for the 1961 Kansas City Athletics and the 1962 Phillies. Across 13 games and 23 innings in three big league seasons he finished 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA, 31 hits and 23 walks allowed and 11 strikeouts. A resident of the Malaga section of Franklin Township in Gloucester County, New Jersey, he stayed active in local youth sports. Keegan died October 19, 2014, in Franklinville, New Jersey, at 75.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
