About Jacke Davis

Davis broke camp with the Phillies in 1962 and collected his first major league hit on April 29 at New York, a triple off the Mets' Al Jackson. He filled in at all three outfield spots, and his only big league home run was a ninth-inning, pinch-hit, three-run shot off Sandy Koufax on June 4 that accounted for all of Philadelphia's scoring in a 6-3 loss. Hitting .213, he was sent back to Buffalo on July 20 to make room for Ruben Amaro, back from military duty. His 1962 Topps #521 is a recognized rookie card from the sixth print series, and it carries an error collectors still chase: the front calls him an outfielder, the back lists him as a pitcher.

Jacke Sylvesta Davis, a right-handed outfielder from Carthage, Texas, played baseball on scholarship at Baylor University and doubled as a back on the football team that upset second-ranked Tennessee 13-7 in the January 1957 Sugar Bowl. He signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1958 for a reported $45,000 bonus, then tied for the Carolina League home run lead with 25 and was named that league's Rookie of the Year at High Point-Thomasville. He led the Eastern League with 33 homers for Williamsport in 1959, and after two seasons at Triple-A Buffalo he broke camp with the Phillies in 1962, batting .213 as a pinch hitter and reserve outfielder over 48 games. That was his only look at the majors; he moved among minor-league clubs in five organizations before quitting after the 1964 season with 117 minor-league home runs. Davis went home to coach Carthage High School and then Panola College, where he went 501-292 and was later elected to the Panola College Athletics Hall of Fame. He died in Tyler, Texas, in 2021 at 85.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
