1962 Topps #583 Larry Osborne

About Larry Osborne
A genuinely tough Osborne card: #583 falls in the seventh series of the 1962 Topps set, the high numbers, so it surfaces far less often than the rest of his run. Detroit used him as the reserve third baseman behind Steve Boros and as a pinch hitter in 44 games, and he answered with a .230 average in just 74 at-bats, no home runs and seven runs batted in; 16 walks carried him to a .374 on-base mark. He even caught one game, his only major league appearance behind the plate. The Tigers went 85-76 and finished fourth, and it proved to be his last season in a Detroit uniform.
Larry Sidney Osborne, born October 12, 1935 in Chattahoochee, Georgia, played six seasons in the majors for the Detroit Tigers and Washington Senators between 1957 and 1963, mostly at first base and third base. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed, standing 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds. His father, Tiny Osborne, pitched in the majors in the 1920s. Larry graduated from West Fulton High School in Atlanta in 1953, passed up a football scholarship from Auburn and signed with Detroit that June. He appeared in five seasons for the Tigers and one for Washington, 359 games in all, batting .206 with 17 home runs and 86 runs batted in. His best professional season came in between: in 1960 he spent the full year with the Triple-A Denver Bears and won the American Association Triple Crown, hitting .342 with 34 home runs and tying teammate Steve Boros for the RBI lead at 119; he beat Carl Yastrzemski for the batting title by three points and was the writers' unanimous All-Star first baseman. After 1963 he played six more minor league seasons through 1969, then scouted for the San Francisco Giants out of Woodstock, Georgia. He died there on April 15, 2011, at 75. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1962 Topps #583 card?
It is card #583 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Larry Osborne of the Detroit Tigers.
Why is #583 harder to find?
It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade.
How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?
600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
