About Ron Piche

Card #582 lands deep in the seventh series of the 1962 set, a high number and the scarcest of Piche's four Topps issues; his first Topps appearance came a year earlier. The season behind it was his busiest as a starter: eight of his 14 games for the Milwaukee Braves were starts, and he went 3-2 with a 4.85 ERA and two complete games in 52 innings. The best of those came on May 30 against Cincinnati, the opener of a doubleheader, when he went the distance on six hits and singled home two runs in the fourth, the only hit of his major league career, in a 4-3 Milwaukee win.

Ronald Jacques Piche, born May 22, 1935 in Verdun, Quebec, was a right-handed pitcher who worked mostly in relief across parts of six major league seasons between 1960 and 1966. He pitched for the Milwaukee Braves, the Los Angeles Angels and the St. Louis Cardinals, appearing in 134 games, only 11 of them starts, with a 10-16 record, 12 saves, 157 strikeouts and a 4.19 ERA over 221 1/3 innings. His only full major league season came in 1963, when he worked 37 games almost entirely out of the Braves bullpen. Signed by Milwaukee as an amateur free agent in 1955, he pitched 17 professional seasons and went 130-65 with a 2.96 ERA in 500 minor league games. He then spent years with the Montreal Expos as a minor league coach, a ticket-office administrator, the club's bullpen coach in 1976 and its director of Canadian scouting from 1977 to 1985; later public relations work there earned him the nickname Monsieur Baseball. He entered the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988 and died February 3, 2011 at age 75.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1962 Topps #582 card?

It is card #582 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Ron Piche of the Milwaukee Braves.

Why is #582 harder to find?

It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade.

How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?

600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
