1962 Topps #518 Lee Maye

About Lee Maye
A respiratory infection put Maye in a San Francisco hospital for nearly two weeks in mid-April 1962 and cost him two months of the schedule. The illness took fifteen pounds off him, and in his first game back he pinch-hit a run-scoring double. He never fully shook it that year, but he was well enough to play regularly after midseason, and the Braves used his speed in center field. He hit two home runs against the Cubs on August 8 and finished at .244 in 99 games. Card 518 comes from the sixth series, printed late in the year.
Arthur Lee Maye was an outfielder who spent thirteen big-league seasons between 1959 and 1971, most of them with the Milwaukee Braves, followed by the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and Chicago White Sox. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and raised in Los Angeles, he made the All-City team at Jefferson High School and signed with the Braves out of school in June 1954. He batted left, threw right, and was one of the fastest men in the game, timed under ten seconds in the 100-yard dash and successful on 38 of 44 stolen base attempts from 1960 through 1963. He won the Braves' left field job in 1961 and had his best year in 1964, when he led the National League with 44 doubles and batted .304. Shoulder, knee, and back injuries and a 1962 respiratory illness kept interrupting him. Away from the park he was a working rhythm and blues singer under his full name, leading the Los Angeles doo-wop group Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns and recording as a solo act for decades. He finished at .274 with 94 home runs and 419 runs batted in, and died in Riverside, California, in 2002.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
