About Roy McMillan

His second Milwaukee summer put McMillan in the 1962 Topps set twice. Card #211, a third-series combination card, pairs him with Frank Bolling, his double-play partner at second base. Card #393, from the fifth series, belongs to the set's National League All-Star subset, though McMillan's own two All-Star selections had come back in 1956 and 1957 with Cincinnati. On the field he hit .246 across 137 games with 41 RBIs and 12 home runs -- a slugging spree by his standards, given that he finished his sixteen seasons with 68 -- for a fifth-place club that went 86-76.

Roy McMillan (born July 17, 1929, in Bonham, Texas; died November 2, 1997) played shortstop in the major leagues from 1951 to 1966 for the Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Braves and New York Mets. He walked into a Cincinnati tryout camp at McKinney, Texas, in 1947 with almost no organized baseball behind him and was signed on the strength of his hands. He took over as the Reds' shortstop in 1952 and spent the decade as the most admired glove man in the league, nicknamed "Mr. Shortstop." He led the National League in fielding percentage four times, won a Gold Glove in each of the award's first three seasons, 1957 through 1959, and made the All-Star team in 1956 and 1957. Alongside second baseman Johnny Temple he formed one of the era's best double-play combinations. Cincinnati's writers named him the Reds' 1956 Most Valuable Player on the strength of that glove -- he hit three home runs that year. Traded to Milwaukee after the 1960 season, he finished as a player with the Mets and later served brief turns as interim manager of the Brewers and the Mets. He retired with a .972 fielding percentage in 2,093 games, and entered the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1971 and later the Texas and Ohio baseball halls of fame.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
