The story on this card
Card 423, Fence Busters, puts the two Willies from the heart of the San Francisco Giants batting order on one card, and the title needs little explaining: both men made a living hitting balls over the wall. Willie Mays came in off a 1966 season of 37 home runs and 103 RBI, and Willie McCovey, by then the everyday first baseman, had 36 homers and 96 RBI that year, including a September 16 blast described as the longest ever hit at Candlestick Park. The pairing ran deeper than the lineup card: in 1961 manager Alvin Dark had made them roommates. It is a fifth-series card.
Willie Mays was the Say Hey Kid, the five-tool center fielder of the New York and San Francisco Giants: Rookie of the Year in 1951, Most Valuable Player in 1954 and 1965, twelve straight Gold Gloves, 660 home runs, Hall of Fame in 1979. Willie McCovey, "Stretch," was the towering left-handed slugger who hit behind Willie Mays in San Francisco -- a three-time National League home run champion, the 1969 Most Valuable Player, and a Hall of Famer with 521 career home runs.
