The story on this card
Dietz shared this Rookie Stars card with fellow Giants prospect Bill Sorrell, part of the fourth series in the 1967 Topps set. He had reached the majors the year before at age 24 and spent 1967 as San Francisco's backup catcher behind Tom Haller, a season that was enough to get him named to the Topps All-Star Rookie Team that September. A San Francisco Giants catcher who became a 1970 All-Star and helped the club to the 1971 NL West title after years as a backup behind Tom Haller.
The 1967 Topps Rookie Stars card #341 puts Sorrell alongside catcher Dick Dietz as San Francisco Giants, a fourth-series card. The Giants had taken Sorrell in the first round of the 1966 Rule 5 Draft after he led Triple-A San Diego with 20 home runs and 80 runs batted in, and Willie Mays counted him among the additions that would make the bench better. It did not work out: he served almost entirely as a pinch hitter and late-inning replacement, managed three hits in 18 games, and was cut on June 22 and returned to the Philadelphia organization. It is Dietz's rookie card; Sorrell had already appeared on 1966 Topps #254. Third baseman and outfielder from Morehead, Kentucky who played parts of three big-league seasons between 1965 and 1970 for the Phillies, Giants and Royals, then two more in Japan with the Hankyu Braves.
