1967 Topps #303 Gil Blanco

About Gil Blanco
Blanco's lone solo card, 1967 Topps #303, is a series-4 base card that lists him with the Kansas City Athletics, the club he joined in the June 1966 deal for Fred Talbot and Billy Bryan. Its stat line is his 1966 season: 11 games, eight of them starts, a 2-4 record and a 4.70 ERA over 38 and a third innings for a seventh-place team that went 74-86. It was the closing line of a two-year major league career.
Gilbert Henry Blanco was a 6-foot-5, 205-pound left-handed pitcher out of North Phoenix High School, signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1964. He reached the majors within a year, debuting for New York on April 24, 1965, at age 19 and working mostly in relief as a rookie. On June 10, 1966 the Yankees sent him to the Kansas City Athletics with Roger Repoz and Bill Stafford in exchange for Fred Talbot and Billy Bryan. Blanco spent his second and final big-league season with the Athletics, making his last appearance on September 22, 1966, still only 20 years old. In all he pitched in 28 major league games, nine as a starter, finishing 3-5 with a 4.45 ERA, 35 strikeouts and 48 walks across 58 and two-thirds innings. Blanco died on July 9, 2026, in his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, at age 80.
