About Phil Roof

Roof kept the job for a second full season in 1967, catching 113 games and starting 107 for a 62-99 club that finished last in the American League. His bat stayed quiet, .205 with six home runs and 24 RBI, but he made only seven errors all year for a .991 fielding percentage and worked on the team that gave Reggie Jackson his first big-league games. Topps #129 is a second-series card, out early in the year, and the last Roof issue to read Kansas City: Charles Finley moved the franchise to Oakland that winter.

Phil Roof was a defense-first catcher whose glove and throwing arm kept him in the majors for 15 seasons while his bat rarely did. Born in Paducah, Kentucky on March 5, 1941, he signed with the Milwaukee Braves in 1959 out of St. Mary High School and debuted at 20, catching the ninth inning of an April 29, 1961 loss to the Giants without ever getting to hit. Two one-game looks with the Braves and a trade to the Los Angeles Angels left him a spare part; only a winter-meetings deal after the 1965 season, moving him from Cleveland to the Kansas City Athletics, finally gave him a regular job. He caught for that franchise through its move to Oakland, then worked for Milwaukee, Minnesota, Chicago and Toronto, becoming the first player the expansion Blue Jays ever acquired. He retired in 1977 with a .215 average, 43 home runs and 210 RBI across 857 games, but also a .986 fielding mark and real arm strength: in 1974 he threw out 48.8 percent of would-be base stealers, second among American League catchers. He later coached in four big-league bullpens and managed 16 years in the Twins chain, winning his 1,000th game as a manager in 2004.
