1967 Topps #323 Mike Hershberger

About Mike Hershberger
Card 323 comes from the fourth series of 1967 Topps, a regular mid-set number. It is also the last of his cards to carry a Kansas City line, since the Athletics moved to Oakland after the season. He played 142 games, hit .254 with 122 hits, 25 doubles and 49 runs batted in, and again produced seven sacrifice flies, matching the total that had led the American League in 1966. It was also the strongest year his arm ever posted: 17 outfield assists, more than he recorded in any other season.
Norman Michael Hershberger, born October 9, 1939, in Massillon, Ohio, played eleven major-league seasons as a right-handed outfielder for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics and the Milwaukee Brewers, closing out his career with a second stint in Chicago in 1971. He graduated from Massillon Washington High School, where he was a Tiger football halfback, and took a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati before signing with the White Sox in 1959. He reached the majors on September 5, 1961, and was known above all for his defense and for one of the strongest, most accurate outfield arms of his era. He held a starting corner outfield job for seven straight years, 1962 through 1968, split between Chicago and the Athletics. Over 1,150 games he batted .252 with 900 hits, 150 doubles, 22 triples, 26 home runs and 344 runs batted in, striking out only 311 times in 3,572 at-bats. Massillon named him a Distinguished Citizen in 2021. He died in his hometown on July 1, 2012, at 72.
