1967 Topps #344 Ossie Chavarria

About Ossie Chavarria
Card #344 in the fourth print series of 1967 Topps shows Chavarria with the Kansas City Athletics, a recognized rookie card for the Panamanian infielder. He split his final big league season between second base and third base, appearing in 38 games as the club's utility infielder before this was his last year in the majors.
Osvaldo Chavarria was a Panamanian infielder and outfielder who reached the majors with the Kansas City Athletics. He signed as an amateur free agent with the Chicago Cubs organization in 1959 before a minor league transaction sent him to the Athletics ahead of the 1960 season. Chavarria made his major league debut on April 14, 1966, becoming the thirteenth Panamanian-born player to appear in the big leagues. His debut came in left field against the Minnesota Twins, where he was held hitless in four at-bats by Jim Kaat. Across his two big league seasons he showed defensive versatility, appearing at first base, second base, third base, shortstop and the outfield. He remained in the Athletics organization through their move to Oakland. After his playing days he turned to umpiring, working minor league assignments and college games, and later umpired at international events including the Olympics, the Baseball World Cup, the Pan American Games and the Intercontinental Cup.
