1967 Topps #227 Paul Lindblad

About Paul Lindblad
Card 227, from the third series, is not Lindblad's rookie card; it shows him still with Kansas City in his second full season working as both spot starter and reliever. He went 5-8 with a 3.58 ERA over 46 games, ten as a starter, striking out 83 in 115.2 innings and saving six games. On July 16, 1967, he threw the only complete game of his career, a three-hit shutout over the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park.
Paul Aaron Lindblad, born August 9, 1941 in Chanute, Kansas, was a left-handed pitcher who spent 14 major league seasons, 1965 through 1978, almost entirely as a reliever. He debuted with the Kansas City Athletics on September 15, 1965, followed the franchise to Oakland in 1968, and later pitched for the Washington Senators, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. After beginning his career as a minor league starter, he moved into middle and long relief and set a major league record for a pitcher by playing 385 consecutive games without an error, a streak that ran from 1966 to 1974. Lindblad won three World Series titles, with the 1973 and 1974 Oakland Athletics and the 1978 New York Yankees, and earned the win in Game Three of the 1973 World Series against the New York Mets, working two shutout innings and getting the last pitching matchup of Willie Mays's career. He finished with a 68-63 record, a 3.29 ERA, 64 saves and 671 strikeouts. After retiring he worked as a minor league pitching coach and as a custom home builder. He died January 1, 2006, in Arlington, Texas.
