The story on this card
Denehy broke camp in 1967 as the Mets' fifth starter after a spring in which he struck out 20 batters in 20 innings under pitching coach Harvey Haddix. In his April 16 debut at Philadelphia he fanned eight, tying the franchise debut record Tom Seaver had set three days earlier, but lost 2-0. He went 1-7 with a 4.70 ERA in 15 games for a last-place club and was sent to Triple-A Jacksonville on June 28. His 1967 Topps #581 is the Mets Rookie Stars card, Denehy on the left and Seaver on the right, and it is his rookie card. A high number from the seventh series, it is a key rookie card of the set. A Connecticut right-hander best known as the young pitcher the Mets sent to Washington, along with $100,000, in the November 1967 deal that brought manager Gil Hodges to New York.
Card #581 is Tom Seaver's rookie card and a key card of the 1967 set: a Mets Rookie Stars card he shares with fellow prospect Bill Denehy, issued as a high number in series 7. He debuted on April 13 against Pittsburgh. By July he had an All-Star spot, and he ended the game at Anaheim by pitching a scoreless 15th inning. He finished 16-13 with a 2.76 ERA, 18 complete games and 170 strikeouts for a last-place club, all new Mets records. Tom Seaver was the Mets' ace right-hander, the 1967 NL Rookie of the Year who won three Cy Young Awards and pitched the 1969 Miracle Mets to a title on the way to 311 wins and a first-ballot Hall of Fame election.
