The story on this card

1967 Topps #486, a Rookie Stars card from the set's sixth series, pairs Reese with fellow Twins prospect Bill Whitby and is Whitby's rookie card; Reese's came on 1965 Topps #597. That season Reese played in 95 games, splitting time between first base and left field, and batted .248 with 4 home runs and 20 RBIs; he also tied for the American League lead in pinch hits, with 13. A steady-gloved Twins first baseman and outfielder through the 1960s and early 1970s, Reese hit his career-best .322 in 1969 and later became a major figure in the spirits industry as CEO of Jim Beam Brands.

This 1967 Topps Rookie Stars card was issued in the sixth print series and stands as Whitby's recognized rookie card. It pairs him with fellow Minnesota Twins prospect Rich Reese on a shared multi-player design. By the time the card reached shelves, Whitby's brief four-game relief stint with the Twins in 1964 was already behind him, the whole of his major league record. A right-handed reliever who signed with the Twins out of Victoria High School, Whitby worked four relief outings for Minnesota in 1964, his only taste of the majors after nine years in the club's farm system.
