1969 Topps #534 Jerry McNertney

About Jerry McNertney
1969 was McNertney's finest season: as the regular catcher for the expansion Seattle Pilots he set career highs with 410 at-bats, 8 home runs and 55 RBI over 128 games, and led the league's catchers in runners caught stealing. He was the last player to bat in Pilots history. His 1969 Topps card, #534, a series 6 issue, shows him with the Pilots.
Gerald Edward McNertney, born August 7, 1936 in Boone, Iowa, was a right-handed catcher who spent nine seasons in the majors. Signed by the Chicago White Sox in 1958 out of Iowa State University, he began as a first baseman and outfielder in the minors before converting to catcher in 1961. He debuted with the White Sox in 1964 at age 27, then returned from 1966 through 1973 with the White Sox, the Seattle Pilots and Milwaukee Brewers, the St. Louis Cardinals, and finally the Pittsburgh Pirates. His best offensive season came in 1969 with Seattle, where he set career highs in at-bats, home runs and runs batted in while also leading the league's catchers in runners caught stealing. Across 590 career games he hit .237 with 27 home runs and 163 RBI. After retiring as a player he coached in the bullpen for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
