1969 Topps #472 Jim Price

About Jim Price
This card lands in his best offensive season, when Price set career highs with 9 home runs and 8 doubles in only 192 at-bats while backing up Bill Freehan behind the plate. One of those homers was a game-ending shot off the Yankees' Steve Hamilton at Tiger Stadium on June 23; he finished the year batting .234 in a career-high 72 games.
Jimmie William Price, born October 13, 1941, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was a catcher who spent his entire five-year major league career with the Detroit Tigers from 1967 to 1971. A three-sport star at Hershey High School, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960 and spent seven seasons in Pittsburgh's farm system, earning Carolina League Player of the Year honors at Kinston in 1963. After losing the battle for a roster spot in spring training 1967, Price was sold to Detroit, where he served as backup catcher to All-Star Bill Freehan for the rest of his career. He appeared in 261 games over five seasons, batting .214 with 18 home runs, and was part of the Tigers' 1968 World Series championship team, though he saw only two pinch-hit at-bats in that Series. After retiring following the 1971 season, Price built a long career in Detroit sports broadcasting, working Tigers games on television and radio for nearly three decades, including as a longtime broadcast partner of Hall of Fame announcer Ernie Harwell.
