About Marty Pattin

Card #563 in Topps' sixth series pictures Pattin with the expansion Seattle Pilots, the only major league club to wear that uniform for a full season. He made history as the Pilots' Opening Day starter on April 8, 1969, beating the Angels, and later came within four outs of a no-hitter against California before settling for a two-hitter. This is his rookie card.

Marty Pattin was a right-handed pitcher who spent 13 seasons in the majors with the California Angels, Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, and Kansas City Royals, finishing with 114 wins and a 3.62 ERA. A standout at Eastern Illinois University, where he once struck out 22 of 27 batters faced in a single game, he signed with the Angels in 1965 and reached the majors in 1968. His best seasons came in Milwaukee, where he won 14 games in both 1970 and 1971 and earned his only All-Star selection in 1971. A blockbuster trade sent him to Boston that October, and he later settled in Kansas City, working as both starter and reliever for the Royals through 1980. After retiring as a player, he coached at the University of Kansas from 1982 to 1987.
