1970 Topps #409 Bob Tolan

About Bob Tolan
Tolan scored 112 runs and drove in 80 in 1970, hitting 16 home runs. Cincinnati won the West and swept Pittsburgh in the NLCS; in Game 2 he scored all three runs in a 3-1 win, including a fifth-inning home run off Luke Walker. Baltimore beat the Reds in five games in the World Series, though Tolan homered off Mike Cuellar in Game 2. Card #409 is in the fourth series of 1970 Topps and lists him with the Reds.
Bobby Tolan broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965 as a left-handed hitting outfielder, serving as a reserve on the pennant-winning 1967 and 1968 clubs before the Cardinals traded him and reliever Wayne Granger to the Reds for Vada Pinson. Handed the everyday center field job, Tolan hit .305 in 1969 and followed with a career year in 1970, batting .316 and leading the National League with 57 stolen bases as the Reds won the pennant. An Achilles injury cost him the 1971 season, but he returned in 1972 to win both the Comeback Player of the Year award and the Hutch Award. Later stops took him to the Padres, Phillies and Pirates, and after a season in Japan with the Nankai Hawks he closed his career with San Diego in 1979. He finished with a .265 average, 86 home runs and 497 RBI. In 1,282 games he also stole 193 bases.
