1970 Topps #384 Gary Neibauer

About Gary Neibauer
Gary Neibauer struck out 42 batters in 57 2/3 innings for the 1969 Braves and went hitless in his 10 at-bats. He also pitched one scoreless inning in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series, which the Mets swept. His 1970 Topps card, #384 from the fourth series, pictures him with Atlanta.
Gary Wayne Neibauer was a right-handed pitcher from Billings, Montana, whose family relocated to Nebraska. Offered football scholarships by Stanford, Wyoming, Nebraska and other Big Eight schools, he played baseball and basketball for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the regular phase and the Atlanta Braves in the secondary phase of the 1966 draft, he did not sign with Cleveland and joined the Braves organization instead. He worked his way up through the Austin Braves of the Texas League and the International League's Richmond Braves before reaching the majors with Atlanta in 1969. Used almost exclusively as a reliever, Neibauer pitched for the Braves through 1972, when a four-player trade sent him to the Philadelphia Phillies; he returned to Atlanta for a final major league season in 1973. Over five seasons he went 4-8 with a 4.78 ERA in 75 games. He spent 1974 with Richmond, then became a Texas Rangers scout and later a mortgage broker, and joined a Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association committee that helped increase the number of former players receiving pensions.
