1971 Topps #691 Bob Heise

About Bob Heise
Heise opened 1971 hitless in his first 11 at-bats with San Francisco, then was traded to Milwaukee for Floyd Wicker on June 1. The Brewers made him their starting shortstop, and he hit .254 for them, including a stretch of 10 games with three separate 3-for-4 days. Card #691, from the sixth series, still shows him with the Giants.
Bob Heise was a utility infielder who appeared in 499 major league games between 1967 and 1977, playing for seven clubs: the Mets, Giants, Brewers, Cardinals, Angels, Red Sox and Royals. He was born in San Antonio to a military family and grew up in Vacaville, California, where Mets scout Roy Partee signed him after Bud Harrelson spoke up for him. He debuted on September 12, 1967, going 1-for-4 with a single against Atlanta, and hit .323 in 16 games. His only major league home run came June 30, 1970, off Danny Coombs of the Padres at Candlestick Park, in a lineup that also held Bobby Bonds, Willie Mays and Willie McCovey. A bench player on the 1975 Red Sox pennant winner, he had a four-hit, five-RBI day in a July 6 doubleheader at Cleveland. After retiring he served 26 years as a police officer.
