1971 Topps #705 Dick Selma

About Dick Selma
Philadelphia had acquired Selma with Oscar Gamble for Johnny Callison on November 17, 1969, and his #705, a sixth-series card, shows him with the Phillies. As the 1970 closer he posted a 2.75 ERA and 153 strikeouts in 134 1/3 innings. His 47 games finished ranked second in the National League. After a loss to the Mets on September 23, 1970, he suggested the game was fixed and was fined $500.
Dick Selma was a right-handed pitcher who spent ten seasons in the majors from 1965 to 1974 with the Mets, Padres, Cubs, Phillies, Angels and Brewers. Signed by the Mets out of Fresno City College in 1963, he debuted in September 1965 and threw a ten-inning shutout with 13 strikeouts in his second career start, a Mets franchise record at the time. San Diego took him in the 1968 expansion draft, and he started the Padres' first-ever game before an April 1969 trade sent him to the Cubs, where he led cheers from the Wrigley Field bullpen during the club's pennant chase. Philadelphia converted him into a closer in 1970, and he had his best season, matching a club record with 22 saves. He finished his career with a 42-54 record and 31 saves before retiring to coach in his hometown of Fresno. He died in 2001.
