1971 Topps #706 Joe Foy

About Joe Foy
Foy batted .236 with 6 home runs for the 1970 Mets. After that season he was sold to the Mets' Tidewater farm club, and on November 30, 1970, the Washington Senators took him for $25,000 in the Rule 5 draft. His #706 in the sixth series lists him with Washington. He hit .234 in 41 games for Ted Williams's Senators. Washington released him on July 16, 1971.
Joe Foy grew up in the Bronx and signed with Minnesota in 1962 before the Red Sox drafted him. He rose through the minors, winning the 1965 International League batting title, MVP and Rookie of the Year with Toronto, and broke in at third base for Boston in 1966. He played third base for the 1967 pennant-winning Red Sox, batting in Boston's World Series loss to St. Louis. Questions about his weight and fielding followed him, and after 1968 the Red Sox left him unprotected; Kansas City took him in the expansion draft. After a strong 1969 season, the Royals traded him to the Mets. His numbers dipped in New York, and after a brief stop with Washington his major league career ended in 1971. Foy later overcame substance-abuse issues and worked as a counselor for troubled youth.
