John Purdin was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent before the 1964 season. He made his major league debut on September 16, 1964, throwing two innings of no-hit relief against the Pittsburgh Pirates and striking out Vern Law and Donn Clendenon. Two weeks later he threw a two-hit shutout against the Chicago Cubs. In the minors he threw a seven-inning perfect game against Lexington in 1964, and at Salisbury he went 14-3 with a 1.91 ERA and 182 strikeouts. He led the Pacific Coast League in games started and shutouts for the Spokane Indians in 1967. Purdin pitched for the Dodgers across four seasons between 1964 and 1969, working almost exclusively out of the bullpen apart from a handful of starts, and finished his career with a 6-4 record and a 3.90 ERA over 58 games. Before pro ball he pitched for a U.S. Air Force team in Wiesbaden, Germany. He died in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2010.
