1971 Topps #592 Randy Hundley

About Randy Hundley
Hundley's 1971 lasted 9 games. A bad knee kept him out of the opener, and he collapsed after hitting a fly ball as a pinch hitter. Knee surgery then ended his season, with 7 hits in 21 at-bats. Card #592 comes from the fifth series of the 1971 Topps set and shows him with the Cubs.
Randy Hundley caught for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins, and San Diego Padres across fourteen big-league seasons from 1964 to 1977. Signed by the Giants out of Virginia, he was traded to Chicago before the 1966 season and quickly became the Cubs' everyday catcher, setting durability records behind the plate while introducing a one-handed catching style that later catchers adopted. He won a Gold Glove in 1967 and earned an All-Star selection in 1969, the year Chicago held first place for months before fading late. Knee injuries in the early 1970s slowed him, and he finished his playing career with brief stops in Minnesota and San Diego before returning to the Cubs. He later managed in the minor leagues and founded baseball fantasy camps for adult fans.
