1971 Topps #611 Tom Phoebus

About Tom Phoebus
Tom Phoebus went 5-5 with a 3.07 ERA for the 1970 Baltimore Orioles, sharing the fourth starter's job with Jim Hardin. On December 1, 1970 he was traded to the San Diego Padres with Enzo Hernandez, Fred Beene and Al Severinsen for Pat Dobson and Tom Dukes. His #611 card, from the fifth series of the 1971 Topps set, shows him with the Padres.
Tom Phoebus was a right-handed pitcher who spent seven seasons in the majors, 1966 to 1972, most of them with the Baltimore Orioles. A Baltimore native who signed with the Orioles for a $10,000 bonus after high school, he debuted in September 1966 by throwing shutouts in each of his first two starts, becoming the fourth American League pitcher to do so. He led the Orioles staff in innings, starts, strikeouts and victories in 1967 and threw a no-hitter against the Red Sox on April 27, 1968. In the 1970 World Series he won Game Two in relief as Baltimore beat Cincinnati. Traded to San Diego after the 1970 season, he closed his career with the Padres and Chicago Cubs in 1972. He finished 56-52 with a 3.33 ERA and 725 strikeouts, then taught grade-school physical education in Florida. He died in 2019 at age 77.
