1972 Topps #665 Chris Short

About Chris Short
Short went 7-14 with a 3.85 ERA in 1971. He pitched 173 innings in 31 games, 26 of them starts, and on May 25 of that year he was ejected for bench jockeying in a game he was not pitching. In 1972 he worked 19 games, all in relief, and went 1-1 with a 3.91 ERA. His 1972 Topps card is #665, from the sixth series, with the Phillies.
Chris Short was a hard-throwing left-hander who spent nearly his entire fifteen-year career with the Philadelphia Phillies, debuting in 1959 and pitching through 1972 before finishing up with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1973. A native of Milford, Delaware, the six-foot-four southpaw was considered one of the National League's top pitchers from 1964 through 1968. In 1964 he went 17-9 with a career-best 2.20 ERA, though the Phillies' historic late-season collapse overshadowed the individual performance. He won 20 games in 1966 and finished his career with 135 wins, a 3.43 ERA, and 1,629 strikeouts. A two-time All-Star, Short earned the nickname "Styles" from teammates because of his wardrobe. The Delaware Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1979, and he died in 1991.
