About Clarence Gaston In Action

After a winter with Magallanes in Venezuela that produced a .299 average in 25 games, Gaston saw Johnny Jeter become the Padres' starting center fielder in the spring of 1972 and shifted to right, a corner outfielder from then on. He played 111 games and hit .269 with 7 home runs. Topps numbered his card #431 and the In Action card #432, both in the fourth series with San Diego.

Clarence Edwin Gaston, nicknamed Cito, was an outfielder born March 17, 1944 in San Antonio, Texas. He reached the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 1967, then became a regular after San Diego took him from Atlanta in the 1968 expansion draft. His best season came in 1970, when he hit .318 with 29 home runs and 93 RBI for the Padres, earning his only All-Star selection and setting the club's batting average mark until Tony Gwynn arrived. Gaston also starred in winter ball in Venezuela, winning consecutive batting titles with Navegantes del Magallanes. He played through the 1978 season with Atlanta and Pittsburgh, finishing his career with a .256 average, 91 home runs and 387 RBI over eleven seasons. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002. He later managed the Toronto Blue Jays to consecutive World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.
