1972 Topps #768 Denny Doyle

About Denny Doyle
With two out in the ninth inning on July 18, 1972, Doyle chopped a single over the drawn-in third baseman to end Steve Arlin's no-hit bid for San Diego. Padres manager Don Zimmer had kept that third baseman playing shallow to guard against a bunt. Doyle hit .249 with 110 hits in 123 games that season. His #768 card, from the sixth series, lists him with the Phillies.
Denny Doyle was a left-handed-hitting second baseman who played 944 major league games for the Phillies, Angels and Red Sox between 1970 and 1977. He grew up in Cave City, Kentucky, and went to Morehead State on a basketball scholarship. Passed over in the 1965 draft, he signed with the Phillies after scout Mel Clark worked him out following a Little League clinic. He climbed the farm system beside shortstop Larry Bowa and was the Pacific Coast League's Most Valuable Player at Eugene in 1969. Philadelphia traded him to California in December 1973, and the Angels sent him to Boston in June 1975. He hit .310 in 89 games for the Red Sox that year, put together a 22-game hitting streak, and started at second base in the ALCS sweep of Oakland and the seven-game World Series loss to Cincinnati. In the ninth inning of Game 6 he was thrown out at home plate, an out that came before Carlton Fisk's twelfth-inning home run, and he was the only player on either side to hit safely in all seven games. He finished with a .250 average, 16 home runs and 237 RBIs.
