About Ray Newman

Topps carried Newman with the Cubs on this card, #667 in the sixth series, though by then he was with Milwaukee. In 1971 he made 30 relief appearances for Chicago and went 1-2. He had a 3.52 ERA and two saves in 38 1/3 innings. With the Brewers in 1972 he appeared in four games and threw 7 scoreless innings with a save. This is his rookie card.

Ray Newman was a 6 ft 5 in left-handed reliever from Evansville, Indiana, who pitched in 45 major league games over three seasons, one with the Chicago Cubs in 1971 and two with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1972 and 1973. He finished 3-3 with a 2.97 ERA, four saves and 46 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings. He became known for riding a bicycle to Wrigley Field. A driver once struck him and he could not pitch that day, which did not amuse Cubs manager Leo Durocher, and Newman was traded by the next spring. Durocher later described his team that year as including a nut who rode a bicycle to the ballpark. The Brewers traded Newman to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Strahler at the Winter Meetings on December 6, 1973. Newman died on May 5, 2023.
