About Rick Wise
Philadelphia traded Wise to St. Louis for Steve Carlton before the 1972 season, after both pitchers had disputed their contracts. Wise went 16-16 with a 3.11 ERA and 20 complete games for the Cardinals. His Topps base card #43, In Action card #44 and Boyhood Photos card #345 listed Philadelphia; Traded card #756 listed St. Louis.
Rick Wise pitched eighteen major-league seasons for Philadelphia, St. Louis, Boston, Cleveland and San Diego. The right-hander finished with 188 victories, 138 complete games and 30 shutouts. He hit 15 home runs and was a National League All-Star in 1971 and 1973. On June 23, 1971, he no-hit Cincinnati and hit two home runs, driving in three of Philadelphia's four runs. Phillies scout Glenn Elliott had signed him from Portland's Madison High School for $12,000 in 1963. Wise later coached pitchers in affiliated and independent minor-league baseball, including Lancaster from 2005 through 2008, and served as that club's interim manager in 2007. The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1987.
