1972 Topps #528 Ron Stone

About Ron Stone
Stone hit .227 in 185 at-bats for the 1971 Phillies, squeezed by rookie outfielders Joe Lis, Willie Montanez and Roger Freed. He had a 6-for-10 run against San Francisco in June, including the winning hit in a 1-0 game on June 6. On April 15, 1972, his ninth-inning pinch-hit single and the winning run he scored gave Steve Carlton his first Phillies victory. His 1972 Topps card is #528, from the fifth series, with the Phillies.
Harry Ronald Stone, a left-handed hitting outfielder from Corning, California, played college ball in Stockton before signing with the Baltimore Orioles organization in 1962. He advanced through the Orioles' minor-league system over the next several seasons, hitting .294 with 16 home runs at Tri-City in 1965, before Kansas City selected him in the 1965 Rule 5 draft. Stone debuted with the Athletics in 1966, then returned to Baltimore's minor-league system for two and a half more seasons. Traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for catcher Clay Dalrymple in January 1969, he spent three seasons as the club's fourth outfielder, with speed, defense and a strong throwing arm as his main assets. He played his last major-league game in 1972 and closed his career in the minors in 1973. Stone finished with a .241 average over five major-league seasons and was later inducted into the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame.
