About this card

Cards #601-616 are the sixteen three-player 1973 Rookies cards, each titled by position. A Rookies card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Hughes's rookie card, #603 in the high-number fifth series, is a rookie panel of third basemen shared with Bill McNulty and Ken Reitz. The card lists him with the Cubs, although Chicago had traded him to St. Louis for minor-league outfielder Bill Bright on April 4, 1973, after he lasted until the second round of spring-training cuts. The card follows a 1972 with Wichita in which he hit .302 with 13 home runs. In 1973 he batted .289 with 10 homers for Tulsa. Third baseman picked second overall by the Cubs in 1967 who played 54 major-league games for the Cubs, Cardinals and Red Sox between 1970 and 1974, hitting .209 with one home run.

McNulty's rookie card, #603, sits in the high-number fifth series as one of the three Rookie Third Basemen, alongside Terry Hughes, printed with the Cubs, and Ken Reitz of the Cardinals. McNulty is printed with the Rangers, who got him in the Paul Lindblad trade with Oakland after he went 1-for-10 as an Athletic in 1972; the hit came off Nolan Ryan. Bill McNulty played nine games for the Oakland Athletics in 1969 and 1972, then hit 55 home runs for Sacramento in the 1974 Pacific Coast League, the most in professional baseball, before a brief stint in Japan.

Reitz played 147 games in 1973. He hit .235 with 6 home runs and 42 RBIs, the first of five straight years in which his RBI total rose. His rookie card is #603, a fifth-series high number in the Rookie Third Basemen subset, shared with Terry Hughes (printed with the Cubs) and Bill McNulty (Rangers). Reitz is printed with the Cardinals. Third baseman for the Cardinals, Giants, Cubs and Pirates from 1972 to 1982, nicknamed Zamboni for his work on turf. He won the 1975 Gold Glove, started the 1980 All-Star Game and led NL third basemen in fielding six times.
